Can an electric car crack 200mph? Watch Lord Paul Drayson take on the land speed record for a sub-1000kg electric vehicle.

We head to Elvington air field, a former NASA Space Shuttle landing site with a two-mile long runway, to see if Lord Paul Drayson can break a record which has stood for 39 years. Using a converted Le Mans racing car, he plans to average more than 200mph and claim the title of fastest sub-1000kg electric car. With 850bhp the racer can hit 60mph in 3 seconds, but with no downforce, can he keep it from spinning out at triple-digit speeds?

Matt Saunders’ Pikes Peak video blog: Monster Tajima’s E-Runner Special launches off the start line, competing in the Unlimited class.

Nobuhiro ‘Monster’ Tajima is back at Pikes Peak 2013 after technical problems eliminated the all-electric E-RUNNER last year. Tajima is convinced he can be the first driver to take an EV up Pikes Peak in less than 10 minutes. This year he faces stiff competition, however, from Mitsubishi who have hired Pikes Peak motorcycle racer Greg Tracy and Hiroshi Masuoka to pilot their MiEV Evolution II to a target run of nine minutes and 30 seconds.

Matt Saunders’ Pikes Peak video blog: Gregoire Blachon’s diesel powered Subaru Impreza launches off the line to compete in the open division
SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=autocar
Gregoire Blachon spent around 100 days converting a stock classic Subaru Impreza into a 22B replica. But its main talking point can be seen under the bonnet, and out of the exhaust when he pins the throttle wide open. It’s powered by a boxer diesel engine tuned to around 200bhp and 300lb ft of torque, with suspension components from an Impreza STI and an aftermarket carbon body kit.

Matt Saunders’ Pikes Peak video blog: Rod Millen launches his Radical-based Toyota EV002 to start the Pikes Peak hill climb
SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: http://youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=autocar
Pikes Peak legend Rod Millen is taking to the hill climb in an electric car for the first time in his career. If electric racing needed an endorsement, surely this is it. With nine Pikes Peak victories under his belt, 62-year old Millen was initially sceptical of their potential. But, after assisting Toyota’s electric entry last year, he was impressed enough to offer his talent behind the wheel for 2013.
