BMW i8 supercar – Frankfurt motor show

The BMW i8 is a plug-in, mid-engined hybrid sports car and was unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show. Is this how the future of cars looks? Watch and let us know below.

The 4.7-metre-long BMW i8 features unusual construction methods, using a carbonfibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) bodyshell sitting on a welded aluminium chassis. BMW claims the i8 can hit 62mph from rest in just 4.4sec with both the engine and electric motor engaged. Top speed — achieved by the petrol engine alone — is 155mph. BMW says this performance is partly thanks to the i8’s relatively low weight of 1490kg and an aerodynamic bodyshell, which has a drag coefficient of 0.26.

The Audi Sport Quattro coupé concept celebrates iconic original and features a bi-turbo V8 and electric motor with plug-in capability. Audi claims 0-62mph in 3.7sec, 190mph and 113mpg. Word is that this concept car is intended to preview a production model that will sit above the Audi R8 at the very top of Audi’s range as a technical and performance flagship.

Ferrari 458 Speciale – Frankfurt motor show

The Ferrari 458 Speciale is a lightweight performance special edition and was the centrepiece of the Italian firm’s stand at the 2013 Frankfurt motor show.

The Ferrari 458 Speciale’s power comes from a modified version of the 458’s V8. With 597bhp and 398lb ft of torque it is the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 ever built by the company. It has a specific output of 133bhp per litre, which Ferrari says is the highest ever achieved by a naturally-aspirated road-going engine. Maximum power is achieved at 9000rpm; maximum torque at 6000rpm.
