In fact, the very first action movie had no heroic star, merely a train, charging toward the audience. Filmmaking has evolved somewhat since the Lumiere Brothers’ train pulled into Ciotat station over a hundred years ago. From the birth of the swashbuckler to the death of the Western, the men who have taken center stage in our action movies tell us a lot about ourselves, our notions of manhood, and our idea of a good time at the movies.
