عائلة الفطيم لا تحب الصحافة، ولربما اكتسبت هذه الصفة من عميدها الحالي ماجد بن محمد الفطيم، فهو شديد الكتمان ولا يصرح حتى لمقربيه بما يدور في ذهنه وتقدر ثروته بحوالي عشرين مليار دولار، مما يضعه في قائمة العشرة الأكثر غنى في العالم، ومن البديهي أن يكون وراء جمع هذه الثروة عمل متواصل، وذكاء وتنظيم، ورؤية حادة، وسرعة في اغتنام الفرص، وتلك هي بعض من صفات ماجد الفطيم.
يقال بأن ماجد الفطيم بدأ حياته العملية موظفاً في بنك عمان، الذي أصبح فيما بعد بنك المشرق، ولم يكن يرغب بالعمل مع أبيه محمد وعمه حمد في تجارتهما التي كانت معروفة في النصف الأول من هذا القرن، وتتركز على الأخشاب والأقمشة واللؤلؤ، غير أنه استطاع أن يقنعهما في بداية الخمسينات باستيراد خمسين سيارة من نوع تويوتا، تم بيعها بأسرع مما توقعا وحققت لهما
أرباحاً جيدة، مما دفع حمد ومحمد الفطيم إلى دعم ماجد وإنشاء شركة جديدة بينه وبين ابن عمه عبد الله سميت حينها باسم الوالدين (شركة حمد ومحمد الفطيم)، وسافر ماجد إلى طوكيو في عام
1955 ليعود ومعه توكيل سيارات تويوتا، الذي بدأ به عمله الخاص وحقق فيه نجاحاً كبيراً لفت إليه الأنظار، وسرعان ما عرف عن ذلك الشاب جده وذكاءه وقدرته على تحمل المسؤولية، حتى
أنه كان ضمن أعضاء أول وفد اختاره المغفور له الشيخ راشد بن سعيد آل مكتوم لتمثيل دبي في المجلس الوطني الاتحادي، هذا الوفد الذي كان برئاسة الشيخ مكتوم بن راشد آل مكتوم الذي كان ولياً للعهد في ذلك الوقت،
اعتمد ماجد الفطيم في بدايات عمله على عدد قليل من الموظفين، وكان أول موظفيه رجل يثق بأمانته يدعى نظام شاه، ثم أضيف له محاسب سوري شاب اسمه بدر أبو شعر، مع بداية السبعينات قام ماجد الفطيم بعمل أول تنظيم للشركة التي توسعت ، فأحضر من مصر مصطفى عفيفي والذي كان يعمل في مصر للطيران لمنصب المدير التجاري، وعبد المنعم عبد العظيم لمنصب المدير الإداري والقانوني، ثم تم إضافة توكيل هوندا الذي بدأ بالموتوسيكلات والمولدات ليتسع في عام 1972 إلى السيارات، فكانت السيارة سيفيك أول إنتاجه، إضافة إلى ذلك كان هناك وكالات أخرى أقل اهمية
مثل محركات يانمار البحرية، وجرارات روب روي، وشاحنات هينو، إضافة إلى قسم ضخم لقطع الغيار لخدمة كل هذه المنتجات كان يحتوي في تلك السنين على خمسة وستين ألف صنف من قطع
الغيار.في عام 1976 حصل ماجد على توكيل سيارات جديد هو دودج الأمريكي، وكانت دودج قد اتحدت مع كرايزلر، وبدأ إنتاجهما يتوحد، وبما أن وكالة كرايزلر كانت لدى الغرير، ولم تكن تدار
بالشكل المطلوب لتأخذ نصيبها من السوق، دخل ماجد في مفاوضات مع الغرير واشترى توكيل كرايزلر بما لدى الغرير من شاحنات وقطع غيار، وجمع التوكيلين في شركة جديدة أطلق عليها
المشروعات التجارية، ثم ضم إليها فيما بعد توكيل هوندا، وبعد ذلك بعدة سنوات حصل على توكيل فولفو وأنشأ له شركة منفصلة.
