سلمان خان هو الابن الأكبر لكاتب السيناريو سليم خان، جده كان مسلما من أفغانستان جاء إلى الهند و استقر في ولاية ماديا براديش،
. زوجة أبيه الثانية هي هيلين و هي ممثلة سابقة شاركت بالتمثيل معه في بضعة أفلام. لديه شقيقان، أرباز خان و سهيل خان، و شقيقتان، ألفيرا و أربيتا, لكن أربيتا أخته بالتبنى .
أنهى خان تعليمه في مدرسة القديس ستانيسلاوس العليا في باندرا، مومباي.
الحياة الشخصية
في عام 2004 تم اختيار خان في المرتبة السابعة كصاحب أفضل رجل من حيث المظهر في العالم من قبل مجلة بيبول (People) في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية. و قد شارك خان في جمعيات خيرية عديدة خلال حياته المهنية. في 11 أكتوبر 2007 قبل خان عرضا من متحف مدام توسو في لندن لصنع تمثال طبق الأصل منه مصنوعة من الشمع. و بذلك أصبح الممثل الهندي الرابع الذي يصنع له تمثال شمعي في ذلك المتحف.
أسس خان منظمة غير حكومية تدعى (Being Human) تبيع القمصان و غيرها من المنتجات في المتاجر و عبر الإنترنت، جزء من المبيعات تخصص لدعم الفئات المحرومة. في أبريل 2012 أصبح سفير العلامة التجارية ل (Travel Website) و (Yatra.com) و التي جعلت منه أيضا أحد المساهمين. و كان قد أيد أيضا قناة التاريخ (History Channel) و دراجات سوزوكي البخارية و مشروب ماونتن ديو
