Sneaky editors behind the scenes in John Wick, Gladiator, The Social Network, Furious 7, The Theory of Everything, Ant Man, Forrest Gump, The Wolf of Wall Street, Nightcrawler, and If I Stay have fooled us into thinking that what’s happening on screen is the truth when it isn’t. Subtle CGI manipulation isn’t the norm these days, and movies are getting more and more extravagant with every year that passes. Natural methane is bubbling up from the middle of the Earth all around the world, and this man is uncovering some of its mysteries. National Geographic Explorer Jeff Marlow is working to understand the ways of a strange deep-sea world. Marlow, a geobiologist, analyzes sediment from the ocean floor that contains secrets to forces that are shaping our planet. Around the ocean’s many seeps of methane gas live colonies of microbes that feed on the methane. The gas is a significant contributor to the greenhouse effect. Observing the interaction between the tiny life forms and their unusual food source adds to the understanding of natural climate factors.

Marlow worked with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Alvin submersible team to study methane seeps and microbes, a project funded by the National Science Foundation. Make sure to learn more about the Alvin submersible at https://vimeo.com/album/4261384/

Google.org + Learning Equality | Closing Global Education Gaps

Technology can create richer learning environments and improve learning outcomes, but not all students are equally benefiting from these advances.

To help more children reach their full potential, Google.org is supporting Learning Equality, a nonprofit organization building educational software for communities with low internet connectivity. Its work in Sacatepéquez, Guatemala, is giving more children a chance to get a better education.

It’s all part of Google.org’s global education initiative which is investing $50 million over the next two years to support nonprofits who are building tech-based learning solutions.
