Where did the Easter Bunny come from? If a child asks, the best answer might be to say, “a mommy and daddy bunny.” But for historians, the question is a bit of a mystery. There are some clues that take us to the American colonial era, and the German Renaissance. But before that, the bunny trail goes cold. The history of humanlike rabbits is pretty weird, though, so it’s worth taking a hop down this historical rabbit hole.

When bombs hit the war-torn city of Mosul in Iraq, zookeepers at Montazah Al-Morour Zoo were forced to abandon the animals. As many as 40 animals left behind died from bombings and starvation. Others escaped. Simba the lion and Lula the bear were the sole survivors, but they were starving and living in poor conditions when found in February. A team from Four Paws International organized a rescue mission to save them. An initial attempt to get the animals out of the city in late March failed when the team was stopped at a checkpoint. But after ten days of negotiating with Iraqi military and government officials, the team was finally able to fly Simba and Lula out of the country. They were sent to New Hope Center, the biggest wildlife shelter in the Middle East, where they will continue to receive medical care and reside as a permanent home.

Watch never before seen footage of soldier ants saving their wounded comrades from the battlefield. Megaponera analis, a small black ant species native to sub-Saharan Africa, wages war on termite nests. Attacking ants can have limbs ripped off or even be decapitated by the termites. Instead of leaving the hurt ants behind, other ants will carry them back home where they can heal and participate again in future raids. Scientists estimate that this strategy can result in colonies that are about 30 percent bigger than those ant species that don’t rescue their injured.
