10 Secrets About How Movie Sound Effects Are Made

Did you know that everything from rain falling to snow crunching is recorded separately and added in later?? Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/ho3Hg6

Without sound, we wouldn’t have movies to immerse ourselves into. But it doesn’t stop there. Most of the sound effects you hear in a movie or TV show is actually artificially produced in a studio, meaning that what the production team is actually recording on set or on location isn’t the sound that makes it into the final cut. So a team of dedicated sound artists use random objects found in everyday life and replicate the sounds using a technique called “Foley”. Even the most simplest of sounds, like that of a dog walking, are more often than note remade in a studio. So how do you made a dog walking? Well, a bit of plastic and a keychain should do the trick. See where we’re going with this? The buzzing of insect or fairy wings isn’t made by the flying of a trapped bug in a jar but rather a bicycle wheel is what brings it to life. Fire is a dangerous thing to play with, especially in a tiny studio so foley artists have to replicate fire without any fire around. Cellophane, bubble wrap and bags of chips can help with that. The same goes with snow, which would melt in the studio unless it’s cold enough so cornstarn can be used and produce a similar effect. Then there’s more physical sounds, such as a blow to the face or someone falling to the ground. Both are impact based but no one even gets touched, instead the foley artists layer different impacts together to get that meaty impact sound. Layering also works with something like a horse gallop, which can actually be made by using real horse hooves but can also be used by hollow wooden objects or coconuts which will produce a similar effect. It’s this level of hard work that makes movies so real and which garner’s Oscars for sound engineering at the Academy Awards.

The Plumes of Europa: Ice, Water, Life?

The Plumes of Europa: Ice, Water, Life?
Susana Deustua, Space Telescope Science Institute

Europa is one of the four moons of Jupiter discovered by Galileo in 1610. Four hundred years later, the Voyager and Galileo space probes took stunning images of Europa, revealing an icy surface crisscrossed by linear fractures. Four years ago, astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope found evidence for plumes of water emerging from Europa’s icy surface. Ultraviolet spectroscopy detected emission indicative of water, and ultraviolet imaging of Europa as it transits Jupiter showed absorption patches suggestive of plumes. If there is liquid water on Europa, will future missions to Europa find evidence of life?

Host: Dr. Frank Summers

Recorded live on Tuesday, April 3 at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A.

IGN’s Top 100 Games of All Time in 10 Minutes

Which games were so far ahead of their time, so much pure fun, that they stand apart? Inside you’ll find our selections for the 100 best video games ever made. http://www.ign.com/lists/top-100-games

How much did this game impact us personally, as well as the industry as a whole, when it came out?

This criterion meant weighing several instances where a sequel successfully iterated and improved upon an original that broke new ground back when it was originally released. As you can imagine, those discussions were a lot of fun.

Games, like all art, are a product of the era in which they were created. So with that in mind, we put less emphasis on whether decades-old games can “hold up” against the modern AAA greats, and placed more importance on how incredible that gaming experience felt in its own era. After all, which is a greater achievement — a game that breaks significant new ground and feels a decade ahead of its time, or a game that comes out a generation later and finally manages to make some small improvements to the formula?

A few other considerations:

• All video games across all platforms were eligible, as long as they were released before December 31, 2017.

• We placed no specific emphasis on different editions or versions of a game, if it has appeared on multiple platforms.

• All entries must be a single video game — bundles or compilations are not eligible. (Sorry, Super Mario All-Stars and Orange Box).

• This list was formed from the collective opinions of everyone on IGN’s core content team.
