As popular as superhero movies are these days, it’s definitely fair to say that the characters in them are very rarely completely faithful depictions of the versions presented in comic books. They often look completely different, have different origins, possess different powers, or have different personalities – in some cases, all four of those differences apply.
Believe it or not, this notion even applies in the incredibly popular Marvel Cinematic Universe – including in the case of the franchise’s heroic characters.
In this video, we’ll be taking a closer look at that particular idea. The following MCU heroes were completely changed for their respective movies; The franchise’s flagship character Tony Stark AKA Iron Man who’s played by Robert Downey Jr., the Guardians of the Galaxy’s leader Peter Quill AKA Star-Lord who’s played by Chris Pratt, the powerful android Vision who’s played by Paul Bettany, the Guardians of the Galaxy’s muscle Drax the Destroyer who’s played by Dave Bautista, former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and scientist Hank Pym AKA the first Ant-Man who’s played by Michael Douglas, the twins Wanda and Pietro Maximoff AKA Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver who are played by Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson respectively, the incredibly skilled archer Clint Barton AKA Hawkeye who’s played by Jeremy Renner, the perfectly designed being Adam Warlock who hasn’t yet been cast, the Asgardian warrior Valkyrie who’s played by Tessa Thompson, and the hilarious rock-like warrior Korg who’s played by Taika Waititi.

Deadpool 2 is just around the corner and we’re getting really excited to see the merc with the mouth return to the big screen with Cable and the X Force. Before that one hits though, we thought we’d go back and take a look at the first movie in the series and specifically try to find a whole bunch of secret references and easter eggs you likely missed. There are a ton in the movie and we didn’t get them all, but we did get quite a bit.

Some of them are obscure tiny details in the background you likely would have never noticed, but once you do see them, they’re going to be hard to miss. There’s a few callouts to other mutants from the comics and a certain mercenary bar is pulled straight from the comics.

Being an extremely meta film, there’s a ton of references to Ryan Reynolds,Hugh Jackman and their previous work both in and out of the Marvel films. Look out for visual gags at the Green Lantern and some love for Wolverine, who in the comics shares a past with the merc with the mouth. There’s also some love for a certain web slinger, despite the fact that he’s at home at another studio these days.

The film also pokes fun at the X Men films and other popular bits of cinema and pop culture throughout. Hello Kitty, 1960s Batman, Ferris Bueller and various celebrities are called out and referenced, and Wade Wilson comes very close to naming some MCU characters-stopping just shy for copyright reasons.
