When watching the latest blockbuster movies, we can easily find all the CGI shots that the filmmakers used. Whether it’s making a lightsaber look like a lightsaber, allowing for epic battles between huge armies, motion captured creations like Thanos, we’re pretty good at figuring out what’s not real. But then there’s CGI that’s so good that you didn’t even notice it. Usually, these effects are done to enhance a shot so they’re not there to be the entire shot. Examples of this include the sets in Gone Girl, including Amy’s house and the casino she ventures to. The hazmat suits in Arrival were all digitally created, which made the lives of Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner easier. In another Amy Adams movie, The Fighter, the effects department had to CGI a napkin. CGI faces and face replacement are common CGI tricks these days and it’s way better than The Rock in The Mummy Returns. Films like Gladiator, which came out in 2000 used this technique on Oliver Reed and it was even utilized in 1993’s Jurassic Park. The Social Network also made good use of his technology in a more advanced stage and Robert Downey Jr. needed it for Iron Man 3. Star Wars and E.T. both had parts of their film tweaked upon release and CGI was used to change certain shots. Spider-Man 2 had a completely digital character and you likely didn’t’ even catch it. Black Swan CGI’d Natalie Portman’s hands while Brokeback Mountain made a herd of sheep that much larger. Machete and Herbie both had to mess around with the female body and how much could be shown on screen while Forrest Gump made sure to add some balls to the shot-table tennis balls that is!
