Live Caption: Making digital media more accessible with a single tap

In 2009, Google added automatic captions to videos on YouTube, taking a step towards making videos universally accessible. But what about stuff that isn’t on YouTube? Stuff like video messages, social media, podcasts, and audio messages?

We worked with the Deaf community to develop Live Caption. With a single tap, Live Caption will automatically caption media on your phone. As soon as speech is detected, captions will appear, all without opening another app, without ever needing wifi or cell phone data, and without anything leaving your phone.

Coming later this year.

Google Lens: Urmila’s Story

For the nearly 800 million people in the world who struggle to read, Google engineers have built a text-to-speech feature into Google Lens. Now anyone can point a phone at text, and hear that text spoken out loud. This new feature, along with its availability through Google Go, is just one way we’re working to help more people understand the world around them.
