One dud or flop of a movie can be enough to ruin a director’s reputation and career. Many of these directors were able to make a comeback, like Paul Verhoeven, Roman Polanski – who recovered from “Pirates” with “The Pianist” – and Oliver Stone’s persevering after the disaster that was “Alexander,” while many are still trying to reclaim past glory, like M. Night Shyamalan, Josh Trank, The Wachowskis and Cameron Crowe. Other directors vying for the top spot include George Lucas, Kevin Costner and Joel Schumacher.

For this list, we’ll be ranking the films that were helmed by directors who had either enjoyed a string of successful prior efforts, or who had a strong amount of critical and commercial buzz in their careers.
