Streaming services like Netflix have taken over the media landscape in recent years — and there are just a ton more on the way. Disney has Disney Plus, HBO has HBO Max, Apple has Apple TV+. With so many services in the game, every company is going to be trying to innovate to make THEIR platform more attractive to consumers.
However, this kind of thing can potentially blow up in their faces too. Just recently, Netflix experienced a ton of backlash from famous actors and filmmakers over the announcement that they were testing a feature that would let people control the playback speed of Netflix content.
This backlash could actually now negatively affect Netflix— hinting at the possibility that filmmakers and showrunners might want their content taken off the platform altogether. We’re entering a weird nebulous time where power could be slipping from the hands of streaming giants and back into the hands of creators. Let’s talk about it!
