Writer/director Rian Johnson’s ‘The Last Jedi’ might have been beloved by critics and a large group of Star Wars fans, but it left some long-time fans out in the cold. Johnson’s decision to make Luke Skywalker, everyone’s favorite hero, a bit of a grumpy curmudgeon didn’t sit well with some. There were fans that just couldn’t wrap their heads around the idea that one of the greatest heroes in the galaxy would just separate himself from the war going on between the Resistance and the First Order.

But there’s a new theory going round that might explain Luke’s questionable behavior. This theory suggests that Luke actually met his demise at the hands of Kylo Ren back when Kylo Ren destroyed the Jedi Temple. Since then, Luke has been wandering the space between life and death, not quite a Force ghost, but not quite alive either. The only thing he’s able to do is project himself into people’s minds. This could explain why he completely pulled himself out of the fight to save the galaxy. Rey is the only one who can see him because of her interaction with his lightsaber.

But does it really make sense? After all, Luke interacted with others like Chewbacca and R2-D2. Could he really have just been a ghost the whole time? Let’s dive into this theory to examine its pros and cons, what works and doesn’t work and whether or not it could have any impact on Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.
