Marvel Theory: The Thor Movies Secretly Introduced The Multiverse To The MCU

The idea of the multiverse has recently become very prevalent in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Both the Ant-Man movies and Avengers: Infinity War have touched upon the concept in different ways – what with the Quantum Realm playing a big part in the former and alternate timelines being mentioned in the latter – and it’s expected to playa HUGE part in this year’s Avengers: Endgame.

However, the multiverse was actually introduced much earlier than any of those movies – in the first two movies of the Thor trilogy.

Just look at the post-credits scene in 2011’s Thor. Erik Selvig mentioned “a gateway to another dimension” when referring to the Bifrost and Asgard. Now, although Asgard has since been established as NOT being in another dimension, it’s clear that Marvel Studios had plans for alternate dimensions in the MCU at that point.

Then, in 2014’s Thor: The Dark World, Selvig was seen scribbling what appeared to be a load of nonsense on a chalkboard when he was confined to a mental institution. What he wrote was actually a load of references to a bunch of concepts from Marvel’s comic books that are related to alternate planes of existence – such as the Fault and the Nexus of All Realities.

All of this came before the likes of Ant-Man, its sequel, and Avengers: Infinity War ever touched upon the ideas of alternate dimensions and timelines.
