8 Movie Reviews: SXSW Movie Roundup!! – CineFix Now Roundtable

The CineFix team was in Austin, Texas for the South by Southwest Film Festival this past week, and boy, did they see a lot of movies. Some of which may be coming to a theater near you! Subscribe: http://goo.gl/9AGRm

Manglehorn, starring Al Pacino and Holly Hunter and directed by David Gordon Green. Pacino turns in an excellent performance in a movie that overall left us mixed. It’s slated for wider release for June 19th, so check it out if you’re curious.

Hello My Name is Doris – Starring Sally Field, and directed by Michael Showalter (whom we interviewed, here: http://goo.gl/egnYa9) – was one of the most delightful moments of the festival for us. Check it out if you can!

Ex Machina, a cool and unique hard science fiction film from Alex Garland (Interview here: http://goo.gl/ySh3tT). Starring Alicia Vikander, Oscar Isaac, and Domhnall Gleeson, it’ll be in theaters everywhere April 10th. Recommended!

Adult Beginners, starring Nick Kroll, Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale, is a late coming-of-age story, and a first time effort by Ross Katz. It has some promising elements, so if you want to check it out, Adult Beginners has a limited release April 24th.

Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, and Morena Bacccarin – you’ve probably seen trailers for this one, as it’s larger studio effort by Paul Feig. You can see it everywhere May 22.

Trainwreck is Judd Apatow’s latest effort, and it debuted a work-in-progress cut. Amy Schumer, Bill Hader, and Brie Larson star in what could be a return to form for Apatow. You can see the final film on July 17th.

7 Chinese Brothers (featuring Jason Schwartzman, but no actual Chinese brothers). Directed by Bob Byington, it’s a classic “festival” film.

The Nightmare was one of the independent horror movies – actually a horror documentary – Cruz and Clint were looking forward to going in to SXSW. They took in a midnight screening of this film by Rodney Ascher (Room 237), which will be released online (and in limited theaters) June 5th.

What are you looking forward to coming out of the festival circuit? Have you heard any buzz about a SXSW movie we didn’t mention? Are you planning to watch Ex Machina, Trainwreck, The Nightmare, or any of these other films when they get wider releases?
