If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. If Hollywood has one mantra, that might be it. For over a century filmmakers have stuck with what works in bringing stories to life on the big screen, often borrowing or copying from previous films to achieve their ends. Sometimes they borrow conceptually – how George Lucas’ love of the “Flash Gordon” serial helped inspire “Star Wars” – while other times they take a lot more. How, for example, George Lucas borrowed the plot of “The Hidden Fortress” to create “Star Wars.” Either way, the more successful film overshadows its predecessor and the latter is forgotten about by audiences, so today we’re here to point out some instances where filmmakers copied scenes from other, often lesser known movies.

From the Vader-Skywalker duel on Cloud City to the mind-bending shootouts in “The Matrix,” and the Thanos-Avengers melee in “Infinity War” audiences have been treated to some epic fight sequences over the years and while some of these are unprecedented works of awesomeness, others are straight up carbon copies of previous, less famous films. Whether producers, writers, and directors intentionally and shamelessly took fight sequences from other productions to furnish their own films with chills and thrills is not always clear, however, the influence is undeniable. Especially when a fight is re-created shot by shot and blow by blow from the original. Either way, Hollywood has thrived on taking the old and making it new again and this video is an attempt to highlight some examples and further examine this in a little more detail.

They say imitation is the highest form of flattery and if that’s true, some films on this list are falling over themselves in praise for their predecessors.
