Ferrari 296 GTB – DRIVEN! Ferrari’s Baby Pocket Rocket Drives as Good as It Looks

The Ferrari 296 GTB is something of a legend in the MotorTrend offices; the quickest rear-wheel-drive production car we have ever tested. The 296GTB is something of a line in the sand for Ferrari – after the V8 celebration that was the F8 Tributo, came this: a mid-engine twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor. The Halo SF90 may have two more cylinders, and three electric motors as opposed to the single one in this, but the 296 has a certain livability that makes It genuinely compelling. Also, the two are dead equal across a quarter mile – 9.6 seconds, but get this, the lighter 296 was traveling faster. I’m surprised Ferrari allowed those two to be that close!

At MotorTrend’s 2024 Performance Vehicle of the Year, we had a car that needs no introduction. The GT3 RS. The hardest, most focused version of the hardest, most focused version of the 911. Aero everywhere, carbon fiber everything, a wing so large Boeing would be proud of it. 9000RPM red line… It’s got a DRS system, for god sake. Surely the best performing Porsche road car ever made, but how does it go on the track?

Here at MotorTrend, we’re very fond of the Hyundai Ioniq 5—so much so we named it our 2023 SUV of the Year, and our appreciation has only grown since then. Its attractive exterior styling, functional interior, and focus on good, honest EV dynamics all add up to make one heck of a package, and when you factor in its relatively attractive price point, it’s hard to find a downside.

Now, there’s a hopped-up hot version, with 2 electric motors, and up-to 641hp – and we have one at our 2024 Performance Vehicle of the Year. So, Joe jumped in for a few hot laps, just as Hyundai intended. Can the 5N impress us on the track? Watch along to find out.

Fast wagons are a dying breed. For most, the allure of looking down on the world from on high, with the added benefits of extra cubby space, headroom, and even some added ground clearance and suspension travel has led many would-be waggoneers to stray down
the SUV path.

As a European I remain fiercely devoted to the cause, which is why I was exceedingly pleased to be offered a first drive of Audi’s very special edition of the RS6, the GT Avant.

Based mostly on the RS6 Avant Performance, which sees power upped from 591-horsepower in the standard RS6 to 621-horsepower, and increasing torque from 590 lb-ft to 627 lb-ft, the IMSA GTO-inspired Avant GT is a masterclass in putting the power down.
