In Mexico’s southern state of Oaxaca, indigenous communities accept a third category of gender besides just male and female. Known as “muxes,” these people combine elements of both genders and fill a unique role within the community. Local acceptance of this mixed gender is rooted in ancient culture and can be traced back to the cross-dressing priests and hermaphrodite gods of Aztec and Maya civilizations.
