Day 4 of The 2022 Four Wheeler Overland Adventure Presented by Jeep would bring some of the most remote terrain yet, and a return to Goffs.

Waking up near Vidal Junction, the adventurers basked in the glow of the sunrise warming the Riverside Mountains to the south. With coffee brewed, tents packed, and vehicles fueled, the group gathered for a final drivers’ meeting. Seasoned Jeep Gladiator Mojave Captain and leader of the 2022 Overland Adventure, Sean Holman, outlined the plans for Day 4 which involved a dry lakebed fly-by, crossing some of the most remote trails of the week, and a return to Goffs, where the adventure began what seemed like ages ago.

Day 3 of The 2022 Four Wheeler Overland Adventure Presented by Jeep welcomed participants with the smells of rain-soaked Creosote shrubs and blooming Ocotillo plants.

The day’s journey carried participants to another of General Patton’s training camps, Camp Coxcomb. This camp was once occupied by the 7th Armored Division, the 85th Infantry Division, the 93rd Infantry Division, and the 95th Infantry Division. Camp Coxcomb can be found across the valley from the Palen Pass Maneuver Area.
Wheels turned once again and we proceeded to Camp Iron Mountain, found in the shadow of the Iron Mountains. As the group unfolded awnings and enjoyed a bite to eat away from the radiating desert heat, some ogled the remains of two chapel altars, one Catholic and another for Protestant services.

The day’s travels concluded near Vidal Junction, where some chose to make camp for the evening. To escape the heat, some folded out shelters from their vehicles to recline in the shade, and others pointed their rigs toward the nearby Colorado River for a refreshing swim.

Day 2 of The 2022 Four Wheeler Overland Adventure Presented by Jeep opened with yet another spectacular sunrise giving the drowsy souls a chance to recall whether the tarantula- and scorpion-hunts from the previous night were a reality or merely dreams.

The expedition’s fearless leader and desert history expert extraordinaire, Sean Holman, roused the crowd and prepared everyone for the trails ahead. Plan: traverse Joshua Tree National Park—but not in the way most tourists do. The General Patton Tank Museum as well as another night of backcountry camping were also in the cards.

The 2022 Four Wheeler Overland Adventure Presented by Jeep began at the town of Goffs just west of Needles, California. Following Registration Day and their first night in the Mojave Desert, participants stacked up in the morning light and prepared to hit the trails.

Trails for the day wound through areas used by General Patton to prepare his troops for combat in the African desert. Patton chose this terrain for its unforgiving and inhospitable nature, hoping that if the soldiers could survive here, they’d be ready for the challenges they’d face while taking on Rommel.

Camp for the night was outside Twentynine Palms, California. Tents sprang from atop the rigs, awnings blossomed like lilies in the spring, and the sounds and smells of camp cookery were abundant. Blacklight-fueled scorpion hunts and aboveground campfire chatter continued beneath the stars.
