Want a quick laugh and have multiple people point at the screen to say “I know them!”? Insert a cameo role into your movie! It works every time and the trend of celebrity cameos continues on year after year. While some cameo roles feature fictional characters, there are countless movies where actors actually played themselves on-screen.

He’s mysterious, a little kooky, and intriguing to multiple generations. It’s Bill Murray, the unpredictable comedian who is so picky with his roles, yet chose to voice the role of Garfield in two live-action films. And on top of that, the famed actor delivered a brilliant cameo role as himself in the horror comedy Zombieland. Adam Sandler is the king of cameos in his movies. There are actors like Rob Scheinder who has shown up in multiple films, athletes like Shaq making a fool of himself in Grown Ups 2, and then there’s legendary actor Al Pacino. Knocked Up is another movie which was built around the ability to include celebrity cameos. When Katherine Heigel’s character plays an E! News reporter, you know the film will be stuffed with random cameos and appearances. Ryan Seacrest has a pretty memorable rant between takes on E! News, but actor-wise, we have to give it to Steve Carrell for his small role in the movie.

Often, these roles are larger-than-life caricatures of themselves based off cliches, rumors, and set reports. So let’s dive deep into these cameos including one John Wick star who is in every movie left and right these days!
