The Arrowverse is gearing up for its next big crossover on December 8th, Crisis On Infinite Earths. The cross-show TV event is exciting for many reasons but today we’d like to focus on just one: Superman.
The Man Of Steel hasn’t had a lot of airtime in the Arrowverse so far. Last year’s crossover, Elseworlds, saw him playing his biggest role yet, in a battle against the evil version of himself. This year, though, there won’t be just one actor playing the caped crusader, but three, and each of them is from a past iteration of Superman. There’s Tyler Hoechlin, who is already in the Arrowverse, the guy who fights himself in Elseworlds.
Then, there’s Brandon Routh, who had the role way back in 2006 for Superman Returns. Since almost fifteen years have passed, Routh will be playing the older, Kingdom Come Superman, who is hardened and bitter after the death of a very special loved one and disenchanted with the moral compass of the public he serves.
But fans are perhaps most excited about Tom Welling’s return. He played Clark Kent in Smallville from the year 2001 to 2011. That’s ten years! Although he only turned into Superman proper, with the costume and cape, at the very end of the show, this is the version of Superman fans know best. The prospect of seeing Welling in full Superman mode is an exciting one.
