Three-time Oscar nominee Sofia Coppola is reportedly in talks with Universal to direct a live-action Little Mermaid film. It’ll be live action, darker, and closer to the Hans Christian Anderson tale.

Sofia Coppola has earned quite a fan base, starting with her 2003 opus, Lost in Translation. That fanbase will certainly appreciate a non-Disney-fied retelling of The Little Mermaid, but are they enough to carry such a film to box office success?

Are you familiar with the Hans Christian Anderson “Little Mermaid”? What do you think of Sofia Coppola as a choice to direct a live-action version of it? Or would you rather re-watch the Disney version a hundred times? What do you think of the general trend toward dark fairy tales in Hollywood?
