Ice Cream Sandwiches & Tikka Naan: Chef’s Night Out with the Badmaash Brothers

Badass brothers, Arjun and Nakul Mahendro, co-owners of LA’s Indian gastropub Badmaash (helmed by father/Chef Pawan Mahendro) head out for a night of flawless food and drinks in Downtown LA. Friends Lele Massimini (Sugarfish), Alvin Cailan (Eggslut) and Ryan Aguilar (Badmaash) join the crew too. First stop is Ari Taymor’s, Alma for a tantalizing tasting menu. Next, they grub and grab beers at Texas BBQ joint the Horse Thief at their perfect patio.

After getting their second wind, they’re off to Japanese-American bar, Wolf & Crane for copious shots of whiskey. Last stop of the night, takes them back to Badmaash for their MUNCHIES meal; featuring a monstrous mash up of Canadian and Indian inspired chicken tikka AND butter chicken sauce poutine, lamb burgers, chicken tikka naan pizzas with tomato chutney sauce and a fitting finale with Parle G ice cream sandwiches.

Patriotic Cookies & War Breadsticks: Ready to Eat Food in Colombia

MREs—or Meals Ready to Eat—are a staple of military life for servicemen and servicewomen around the world. The compact meals are designed to get soldiers all the energy and nutrients they need for maximum battlefield efficiency. But a lot of times, MREs end up lying around by the boxful during drills or exercises, free for the sampling, which is how MUNCHIES host Daniel Hernandez first got to know this curious method of feeding the troops.

Daniel sat down with a few Colombian soldiers between drills in the midst of the Fuerzas Comando 2014 competition, held last year at the Tolemaida military base in Tolima, Colombia. He decided to eat an entire MRE, right down to the coffee and dessert, to get a taste of what military personnel eat in the field when options are extremely limited.
