Can a 1,750kg Land Rover Bowler EXR S Dakar racer keep up with a 520kg Caterham Seven Supersport track day toy? Steve Sutcliffe finds out.

This is a clash of the opposites. The Bowler EXR S is based on the Land Rover Range Rover Sport, but very little of the original car remains. Designed for Dakar-type off-road racing events, the 1,750kg Bowler has 550bhp, a sequential gearbox and trick suspension. But can it really keep up with a car weighing 520kg on a smooth track? The Caterham Seven Supersport has just 140bhp, but we all know it can embarrass some exotics. How about the £155,000 Bowler?

When Autocar was asked to spend a day driving the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta in Italy, Steve Sutcliffe jumped on a plane and headed out on the twistiest tarmac he could find. With a 6.3-litre V12 engine producing 730bhp at 8,500rpm and then sending it to just the rear wheels, of course he turned the traction control off. Sit back, turn up your speakers and watch Maranello’s Lamborghini Aventador rival at full chat.

Which is faster? An Ariel Atom V8 track day toy, BMW HP4 superbike or a rallycross Citroen DS3 with 600bhp?

Here we have three completely different ways of going extremely quickly in a straight line. Time for a drag race then. So what are the contenders? There’s the one-wheel drive BMW HP4 superbike, which arguably requires the most skill to extract speed from but has a ludicrous 757bhp/tonne power-to-weight ratio. Then there’s the two-wheel drive Ariel Atom V8 with 748bhp/tonne and the Citroen DS3 Rallycross car with only 577bhp/tonne but all-important four-wheel drive. Oh, and did we mention it’s wet?
