Last year we tested the BMW M5 super saloon against the mighty Nissan GT-R, and it was royally defeated almost across the board. Steve Sutcliffe took them on track to test their acceleration, handling, outright grip, braking and interior practicality and appeal. We head to Elvington air field, a former NASA Space Shuttle landing site with a two-mile long runway, to see if Lord Paul Drayson can break a record which has stood for 39 years. Using a converted Le Mans racing car, he plans to average more than 200mph and claim the title of fastest sub-1000kg electric car. With 850bhp the racer can hit 60mph in 3 seconds, but with no downforce, can he keep it from spinning out at triple-digit speeds?

The oldest competitor in the 91st Pikes Peak hill climb is 72-year-old Ralf Murdock in his 1970 Chevrolet Camaro SS. And, if proof were needed that experience is everything at Pikes Peak, he broke the record for modified vintage cars with a time of 12 minutes 50 seconds, in a car built with the help of his kids. He started racing at Pikes Peak in 1965.
