The Mazda MX-5 is one of our favourite affordable sports cars, but compared with the current crop of high-performance cars, it is beginning to feel a little outgunned. With that in mind, Northampton-based BBR has developed a turbo kit boosting power to 285bhp — slightly more than the Ford Focus ST. Without a doubt, the Alfa Romeo 4C is the most important Alfa Romeo for decades.

Alfa has spent many years being messed about by successive managements, every one with different half-cooked ideas, then quite a few more. Recently it has had its better-known values attached to B and C-segment hatchbacks – the Mito and Giulietta – because that is where the money is.

Yet no car in recent history has deliberately set out to embody Alfa values. The 8C Competizione helped, of course, but it was really only a concept made good. In truth, it is at least 30 years since Alfa Romeo has built a car for real people that directly and affordably expresses its values. BMW’s M division has lifted the veil of secrecy on the new in-line six-cylinder engine bound for its upcoming M3 saloon and M4 coupé and convertible. The brand has revealed a potent twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre direct-injection petrol unit that produces an official 424bhp at 7500rpm and what officials describe as “significantly more than 369lb ft” of torque. With 200bhp on tap and a kerb weight of 495kg, the road legal Formula Ford EcoBoost could be the future of sports cars, track cars, and even supercars.

You could argue Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost-powered, road-legal Formula Ford is just a marketing exercise. But from an engineering – and a petrolhead’s – point of view it’s a whole lot more relevant than that; an intriguing gaze into what might be achievable for sports cars of the future. In the tail sits a 200bhp version of Ford’s three cylinder 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, and although there are headlights, indicators and even a handbrake to justify the numberplates, to all intents and purposes this is a racing car that will never be raced.

The 4.7-metre-long BMW i8 features unusual construction methods, using a carbonfibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) bodyshell sitting on a welded aluminium chassis. BMW claims the i8 can hit 62mph from rest in just 4.4sec with both the engine and electric motor engaged. Top speed — achieved by the petrol engine alone — is 155mph. BMW says this performance is partly thanks to the i8’s relatively low weight of 1490kg and an aerodynamic bodyshell, which has a drag coefficient of 0.26.
