The Wayans brothers created a monster. The Scary Movie franchise survived through five movies, spoofing and lampooning mainstream horror movies of the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s. Although the Scary Movie series started as a spoof of the self-aware slasher hit, Scream, the comedy and its subsequent sequels parodied Halloween, The Exorcist, The Sixth Sense, Blair Witch Project, The Shining, The Ring, and Signs just to name a few. But the franchise also found room for jokes poking fun at other movies of the day: including Titanic, Amistad, Election, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Lord of the Rings, Eight Mile, Minority Report, and a even stuck in a bunch of references to The Matrix. When the Wayans left after Scary Movie 2, filmmakers behind Airplane and The Naked Gun took over the directing and storytelling duties. From there, the franchise eventually burned out.
