Shark Tale and Zootopia have a couple of things in common; they’re both animated movies about talking animals. However, they were released over a decade apart and aren’t even made or released by the same production company, so it’s safe to assume that’s the extent of their similarities. Well, you know what they say about assuming? They say you shouldn’t do it.

In this video, we’ll examine how Shark Tale and Zootopia actually take place in the same universe, and how these two lovable films are actually a lot more linked than originally anticipated. We’ll discuss the relationship between land animals and sea animals, and explain why there doesn’t appear to be any regular cats or dogs in either world. We’ll also explain how this all ties back into the greater Pixar theory. All in all, both these movies share a number of fascinating correlations and despite their differences, actually take place within the same world.

Spider-Man got bit by a radioactive arachnid. Captain America got a shot full of super-soldier serum. The Fantastic Four got blasted by cosmic rays. But what makes a screen adapted superhero so super? Casting. Every classic film has it’s tales of last minute scripting changes and director swaps, but if the chemistry isn’t right on screen, millions of dollars can go down the drain. Thankfully, the biggest films tend to have the right actors in mind.

Tom Hiddleston is a master thespian and the perfect Loki. Joaquin Phoenix’s eccentric performances have elevated many a film, including his star turn as the Joker. Sebastian Stan’s conflicted Winter Soldier is the perfect one-time foil/troubled ally for Captain America. As for Michael B. Jordan, his turn as Kilmonger was one for the books. By the same token, Sam Rockwell and Mads Mickelson they kicked Avenger butt as iconic screen villains. In the DC universe, Heath Ledger and Cillian Murphy gave star turns as the Joker and Scarecrow respectively. So, what would life have been like if they were cast in different roles. What if someone you’ve always recognized as a hero ended up playing a classic villain and vice versa. What if Channing Tatum – instead of being in the running for the unmade Gambit film for all these years – played a certain Avenger?

Ever stop to wonder why cartoons never change? Like, it never moves on a linear timeline. It’s almost as if they’re stuck in time, even if the show airs in real time for decades; episodes tend to always finish the same way they started. There’s never much evolution or change. Like, characters rarely age or even change their clothes.

In this video, we’ll dig into the reasons behind this. More often than not, it’s just cheaper to keep things stagnant, especially in the expensive world of animation. Having a character switch up outfits or actually start showing signs of aging would be nearly impossible to do. That’s why so many of your favorite shows, like The Simpsons, Rick & Morty, and South Park all tend to stay exactly the same safe for a few minor tweaks.
