Koalas typically meet most of their daily need for water just by eating leaves. But researchers from the University of Sydney have documented an increase in sightings of koalas looking for water. Cameras near watering spots around the New South Wales, Australia town of Gunnedah showed koalas coming to drink, a cute sight that nonetheless may signal increased pressure from climate change.

Veterinarians in Thailand removed 915 coins, amounting to 11 pounds, from the stomach of a sea turtle. Nicknamed Omsin meaning “piggy bank,” the turtle had been living in a pond in a state park where people threw coins in for good luck. After being moved to a conservation center, she showed signs of distress and was taken to a veterinary clinic. The coins were successfully removed during a four-hour-long procedure, and she seemed to be doing better. However, a week later she died after a second surgery was done to try and repair intestinal damage. Nickel toxicity is thought to have damaged her immune system. Green sea turtles are endangered, and some of their biggest threats are created by humans.

A 150-pound hyena, normally a formidable predator, instead becomes prey for an enormous African rock python in this footage taken by a vacationer in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve. Researchers from Michigan State University studying hyenas in the area were shocked by the event, but confirmed that the snake did eventually succeed in swallowing the hyena.
