من أب مصري، وأم أرمينية، خرج إلى الدنيا، الدكتور بطرس بطرس غالي سادس أمين عام للأمم المتحدة، الذي توفي، الثلاثاء، عن عمر يناهز 94 عاما، على أثر إصابته بكسر في الحوض.
الدكتور بطرس بطرس غالي حفيد بطرس نيروز غالي رئيس وزراء مصر من 12 نوفمبر 1908 إلى 1910 والذي اغتاله إبراهيم الورداني.
ووالد جده نيروز غالي كان ناظرا للدائرة السنية لشقيق الخديوي إسماعيل في الصعيد
الدكتور بطرس بطرس غالي هو أيضاً عم يوسف بطرس غالي الذي كان وزيراً للمالية.
بدأ الدكتور بطرس بطرس غالي حياته المولود في 14 نوفمبر 1922، كأستاذًا للقانون الدولي والعلاقات الدولية بجامعة القاهرة عام 1946،
، قبل أن يحصل على الدكتوراة من فرنسا في عام 1949. وشارك غالي في تأسيس مركز الأهرام للدراسات السياسية والإستراتيجة، كما أسس مجلة السياسة الدولية الفصلية بجريدة الأهرام.
خبيرًا في الشئون الدولية، دبلوماسيًا قديرً، وعلى صلة وثيقة بالقانون الدولي، على مدى 70عامًا، ما أهله لتولي العديد من المناصب الدولية
والمحلية، كان آخرها رئاسة المجلس الأعلى لحقوق الإنسان عام 2011.
وكان تولى منصب أمين عام الأمم المتحدة 1992 – 1996 بمساندة فرنسية قوية
ليصبح أول عربي يتولى هذا المنصب ، في فترة سادت فيها صراعات في رواندا والصومال وانجولا ويوغوسلافيا السابقة، ولم يجدد لغالي في المنصب فترة ثانية، بسبب استخدام الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، حق الفيتو بعد انتقادها له.
تقلد غالي عدة مناصب حكومية مصرية، منها نائب رئيس الوزراء للشؤون الخارجية في مايو 1991، ووزيرا للدولة للشؤون الخارجية من أكتوبر 1977 وحتى 1991.
وساهم غالي بدور بارزًا في مفاوضات السلام بين مصر وإسرائيل، كما حضر وكان له دور في المفاوضات المتعلقة باتفاقات كامب ديفيد بين مصر واسرائيل التي وقعت في عام 1979 حتى أطلق عليه «مهندس عملية السلام».
