Checkers Is the Heart and Soul of This Neighborhood | Short Film Showcase

The Razor, The Stealer, The Pressure Man—these are just a few of the nicknames hard-earned by the players at Capital Checkers. Through good times and bad, this Washington D.C. club has been a staple in the community for more than 30 years. As the surrounding neighborhood continues to change, club president Tal Roberts reflects on the importance of keeping their tradition alive. “It is primarily important that we keep this game going and we keep our place right here in the nation’s capital.”

About Short Film Showcase:
The Short Film Showcase spotlights exceptional short videos created by filmmakers from around the web and selected by National Geographic editors. We look for work that affirms National Geographic’s belief in the power of science, exploration, and storytelling to change the world. The filmmakers created the content presented, and the opinions expressed are their own, not those of National Geographic Partners.
